The Opportunity

Orange Tree needed to engage smaller scale prospects in a way that was consistent with their exceptional service but didn't expend sales resources.

They envisioned a tool that allowed HR professionals to self-discover Orange Tree services, without sacrificing the personal insight and guidance exhibited by their team members

The PROCESS

Together with Orange Tree, KRUTSCH developed Build Your Own Solution, a web app that builds custom background screening packages while educating users about potential risks and benefits along the way.

We began with a series of workshop meetings to understand the problem domain and desired outcomes. Then, we interviewed OrangeTree sales professionals and reviewed sales call recordings to learn the process and strategy for diagnosing the right collection of services and risk mitigation for each client.

The Approach

After analyzing our findings, we put together a prioritized task list and feature set, followed by workflow development. The workflow focused on using a primary step-by-step pattern to build solutions, which educated users about the components of a successful background screening solution.

A secondary Customize Package workflow was developed for seasoned HR professionals familiar with the nuances of the individual background screening services. This workflow allowed for building multi-package solutions with quick selection of services and depth parameters.

The Approach

To begin developing a visual language for the Build Your Own Solution experience, we sketched a happy-path workflow, which was then drawn as high-fidelity screens.

With a framework in mind, we iterated on bucket questions with Orange Tree to help users consider the risk mitigation and services needed for their particular hiring process. We also developed a grid of selection-based insights to inform the user of tips and considerations while building.

In addition to content development, we designed interactive visual features highlighting how service selections affect the risk level of a solution.

Based on desired depth of coverage, depth sliders expand and contract next to affected services.

A bell curve visualizes where a solution falls on the risk mitigation scale, enticing users to increase depth or add additional services to inch closer to the coveted “low risk” side.

A final printable solution report provides a take away so users can pass along information to other team members or key decision makers.

The final prototype was test across desktop and mobile before deployment.
